On Wednesday, May 18, eight Smithies gathered on Zoom to discuss “Band of Sisters” by Lauren Willig. We were proud of these Smithies, fictional but based on real alums who went to France in 1917 to aid the civilians whose lives had been torn apart by the war. Although we had some criticisms of the book, overall we felt the author presented likable and believable characters; depicted well both the confusion of war and the wretched conditions of the French civilians—some of which the Smithies shared; and imagined credible relationships that moved the story along. We were glad we’d learned about this bit of Smith history, including why the campus has the Grecourt Gates.
